Finished the last final for this semester of grad school (M.Ed.) and this was my reward. So good!About once or twice a year I find myself burdened with 1st world guilt. I lose sleep and tell my husband we need to sell everything we have been blessed with and move to Africa to help dig wells because of my guilt. I am so inspired by people that work in inner-city schools and for non-profits and I constantly feel like I am not doing enough. I was a little worried this book would make me feel the same way...but it didn't. Instead, this book helped me to realize that while I live and work in an area of majority middle-class white kids from conservative, two parent homes who spend way too much money on sports leagues and dance camps, they still need me to show up for them. While they may have some advantages, high school is still the hardest thing they have ever had to do in their lives. We have the highest suicide rate in the country. We have kids without enough to eat, who have to work to take care of younger siblings, who have debilitating anxiety and stress in their lives. I have students with serious medical issues and violent home lives. On the outside it may appear that my students have it so much easier than others, but really, they are teenagers who need love, respect, and mentors to show them how to be the amazing adults they can become. So thanks for the validation and the reminder that what I do in a suburban, middle class, pottery-barn-kind-of area is important and matters. Before this book, there was a YouTube channel.Last year, I applied to substitute teach at my children's elementary school. I'd stayed at home with them for so many years, and needed to have the same hours and stay connected to them in some way. The issue wasn't getting the job. Humor is how I cope. Initially, that caught my attention. And then the message he was sending absorbed, and I remember my mouth falling open and thinking, "This is it. I had it all wrong before."It was a few key points that you'll find in this amazing book so perfectly written in his "voice", that made me the rising star sub, who then got an interview, who then became a SPED paraprofessional, who now is going to the next leadership meeting as Lead Para this week. CJ explains the necessity of building relationships with students. That is so on point. Go on the OFFENSE, not the defense guys. Kids already have their backs up with authority figures. He explains ways to sprinkle magic and humor into everyday lessons. He'll show you that the best way to "discipline" troublemakers, is to CARE. Care about these kids, and want nothing but success and the best for them.His videos and this book will turn the coin over and show you the other face of teaching. Teaching with love, and heart, turning it up to 11, making school as fun as you can because everyone knows school sucks. With the help of this book, you'll make a difference in these kid's lives, and I'm sooo grateful I clicked on that video a year ago. Because making a difference is what it's all about.
